Dr. Lanny Boswell is currently a senior scientific advisor and coordinator with Naval Health Research Center San Diego, Warfighter Performance and Operational Readiness Directorate.  His principal efforts are to integrate medical and scientific advancements for the optimization of Joint Service operational capabilities and warfighter performance. HI current effort is to develop an operational capability that utilizes wearable technologies to monitor warfighter fatigue risk, health, and operational stressors.  

During his 35 years of service in the United States Navy, Dr. Boswell has served throughout the world to include Europe, the Caribbean, and the Middle East and has held many joint-service, leadership, and operational positions.   He previously served as Commanding Officer of the United States Naval Hospital Ship, USNS COMFORT (T-AH-20), a 1000 bed surgical trauma center;  Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA, a center of six major laboratories focused on Joint Service deployment issues; and as Theater Director of the CENTCOM Joint Combat Casualty Research Unit in Afghanistan, where scientific identification and validation was applied to innovative combat trauma medicine. 

His other leadership experiences included National Director of Research and Surveillance for the DoD-VA Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) for the advancement of biomechanical and medical technologies.  Director of Strategic Analysis for the Naval Service Training Command, a multi-disciplinary team in the analysis, development, and implementation of programs for problem solving and improvement in Naval training programs.  Later, Dr. Boswell served as Director of Warfighter Performance Laboratory, here he focused on optimizing the warfighter for the rigors of deployment. 

Dr. Boswell has served in a variety of positions to identify, prioritize, and fund science and technology efforts for the advancement of warfighters and operational capabilities.   He has served as the Naval Special Warfare representative to the U.S. SOCOM Biomedical Research Committee (BISC), the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) and Military Operational Medicine Research Programs (MOMRP), the Federal Advisory Committee (FACA) for the Veterans Administration Musculo-Skeletal Health and Function Research.  He currently serves on the Board of Directors of Musculoskeletal Injury Rehabilitation Research for Operational Readiness (MIRROR) at the School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University.

Dr. Boswell’s operational deployments included Carrier Strike Groups to the Arabian Gulf, humanitarian assistance missions to Kenya, Tanzania, Haiti, Cuba, and Romania, as well as medical civic actions in Iraq and tribal engagements in Afghanistan.  He was also deployed to Iraq embedded with SEAL Team FIVE as part of the Navy’s first expeditionary musculoskeletal care team assigned to Special Operations Task Force West.

Dr. Boswell’s military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, four Navy and Marine Corps Meritorious Service Medals, five Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, and the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Dr. Boswell holds a PhD in Sports Medicine/Physiology from the University of Virginia, a Masters Degree in Physical Therapy Neuro-Muscular Skeletal Medicine from Baylor University.He holds a board certification specialty in orthopedics andisacredentialedelectromyographerandneuro-musculoskeletalprimarycareprovider.
